Open Question: How do we pick a date for our wedding?

We have been told that members of our families are going to help out financially, but they are all asking us when the date will be. We initially planned on a very small ceremony, but as time goes on, we are learning that that may not end up being the case. We wanted to get married asap, hopefully before spring, but the logistics are a nightmare...we live in TN, and except for our very immediate family members, we have guests that will be travelling from GA, Colorado, and South Carolina. Is it appropriate to set a date in 3/4 months, or would that be too difficult for our out-of-town guests? Wow, I received far more answers than I was expecting! Thanks! We don't HAVE to be married by a certain date, we just thought that a year was too far away, and that most reasonable venues would be booked in peak wedding season....thus the idea of marrying right before "wedding season".
